In this post for WG3’s blog, Ben Blink proposes a “people-centered standard for online transparency.” Current transparency reports do not provide sufficient information for citizens to make informed choices about what Internet services they feel safe using, and where they feel safe using them. Ben offers a “litmus test” for companies and governments to evaluate whether their reporting serves this end, and proposes questions that transparency tools should answer to be useful for citizens.
This post is the part of WG3’s effort to develop a multistakeholder definition of what corporate and government transparency means from the user perspective. The Group will be developing the definition and soliciting public input over the next few months.
