FOC Strategic Review Working Group Statement on Independent Report by University of Pennsylvania

Five years after its inception in The Hague in 2011, the Freedom Online Coalition is carrying out a Strategic Review looking at four key areas: membership, organizational structure, objectives and activities, and funding. The Review was announced at the Annual Conference in Ulaanbaatar in May 2015 and will report to the Annual Conference in Costa Rica in October. An independent researcher contracted by the University of Pennsylvania, Susan Morgan, has been conducting an external assessment of the Coalition as part of this effort. The final report looks at the four focus areas and was published on 4 May on the University of Pennsylvania website.

The Coalition’s Strategic Review Working Group has issued a statement on the report, thanking the authors and editorial team for their efforts and the contribution they have made to the ongoing discussions around the future direction of the Coalition. The work of the authors of this report, in assessing how the Coalition is perceived by a range of stakeholders both within and outside the Coalition will be valuable in allowing the Coalition to explore its challenges and opportunities and understand the added value the Coalition can bring to promoting internet freedom.

The Strategic Review Working Group will consider this report, and the author’s recommendations, alongside a number of other sources and inputs as its Strategic Review progresses, with a view to further discussion at the 6th Freedom Online Conference.
