Internet security and surveillance technologies may be employed by free societies to protect the public’s rights, but they may also be used by authoritarian regimes to exercise control over their citizens. How companies should deal with these two issues is an important question of corporate social responsibility (CSR). This background paper explores the debate surrounding CSR and shows existing initiatives.
